Two years ago I set up the New Cross Road Round Table group in response to constant complaints about traffic on New Cross Road, New Cross Gate Station and the general environment, including the Sainsbury's site.
The group holds regular quarterly stakeholder meetings and, after a slow start, real progress is now beginning to be made. This was especially evident at the latest meeting on 19th October, during which the Round Table heard of the development plans being bought forward by both the New Deal for Communities (NDC) and Sainsbury's.
The NDC proposals include the redesign of the Kender Street gyratory system and new investment in the high street. Besson Street and Kender Street would also become 'streets for people', with new tree planting and traffic calming measures.
Relocating the railway station to improve facilities and safety for users is a major aim for the group. The Sainsbury's development would make it possible to provide a focal point for the area, giving New Cross Gate a sense of identity. Specifically, the proposals looked at are as follows:
