Nationwide have announced that branches will be closing in Lewisham, Peckham, Catford, Blackheath, Greenwich, Woolwich and Walworth from the end of May; leaving the nearest branches at Bromley and Eltham.
It seems incredible that a Building Society can be closing so many branches in a concentrated area. Closing seven branches does not make sense. I want to ask managers whether they looked at the geography and transport routes in the area when they came to this decision. I cannot see many customers who live in Lewisham Deptford travelling to Bromley, Eltham or further afield to carry out their banking.
I will also be asking whether this is part of a national strategy or whether it is just an issue in South East London and whether it is not possible to provide at least one outlet in the local area. I am sure many people who have remained loyal to the mutual principle will be distressed by this decision.
