Most other rights and responsibilities in our democracy are accorded to people at the age of 16 and I believe the right to vote should be added to the list. My visits to schools suggest that young teenagers are very interested in political issues and would become involved if they are offered the opportunity. Increasing participation is vital to a healthy democracy and we know that if people start voting when they are young they are most likely to make it a lifetime habit. Many decisions affecting 16-18 year olds are made by local and national governments and I believe they should have an opportunity to vote for those who will influence their lives.
I call on people of all ages to back this campaign by visiting the site and becoming a supporter too.
The campaign website is run by the 'Votes at 16' coalition, a group of over fifty youth and democracy organisations, who are steered by the British Youth Council, The Co-operative, the Children’s Rights Alliance for England, the National Union of Students and Scottish Youth Parliament.
