Constituents have made the case for not granting a licence under the main headings of protection of children, public nuisance, public safety and crime and disorder and I endorse everything they say.
Great concern has been expressed in parliament about the operation of lap-dancing establishments and evidence produced of their association with the commercial sex trade.
The police and local authority are working hard to reduced crime in the area and the Government's New Deal for Communities programme has brought tens of millions of pounds worth of new investment with more to come through the NDC centre. All would be jeopardised if the licence were granted.
The responsible minister, my colleague Gerry Sutcliffe, has said that residents elsewhere have successfully used the Licensing Act to deal with unwanted lap-dancing clubs, but that there seems to be uncertainty from local authorities. I trust this will not be the case with Lewisham Council and that this application will be turned down without delay.
