Following an exchange in the Commons during which John Hayes MP (Minister for Further Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning) said that college students' places would not be put at risk by the propsed to the Education Maintenance Allowance, I have taken up the challenge.
I presented the Minister with a survey of 10% of the 229 Lewisham College students on 2 year courses in receipt of EMA.
These students began their courses in good faith. They qualified for up to £30 a week because their families were on low incomes or are unemployed. They’ve spent the money on travel, food, books and equipment. Equipment for some courses can cost as much as £200. These students face real hardship when the EMA is cancelled halfway through their studies.
I’m calling on the Minister to reverse his decision, but assuming he won’t I’m asking for a substantial transitional payment to enable Lewisham College students and others like them to complete their courses.
