Lewisham Street Litter to Be Recycled

25/9/2008

Picture
A new recycling bin is being trialled on the streets of Lewisham town centre, with the aim of encouraging people to recycle their litter.  The "Greenie" is a split recycling bin which enables people to drop litter into one of two sections: one for general litter and one specifically for recyclable waste.

Recycling has really taken off at home, increasing by 4 times as much in the last 10 years. But we realise that people eating and drink away from home but can't so easily recycle.

The "Greenie" is the only recycling bin in Europe to be made with recycled materials. The adaptable top means local authorities can synchronize their "on the streets" collection with other collections, making the "Greenie" the most multi-function bin on the market. Each side of the "Greenie" can hold up to 180 litres of rubbish and can be adapted to an organisation's individual needs.

The bin was designed by local TV Producer Matthew Bird. Matthew, whose company Recycle-Rubbish Ltd is based in Forest Hill, came up with the idea of the split recycling bin after his interest in alternative systems for public recycling originally started on filming trips abroad. Matthew went on to conceive the idea for the "Greenie" after winning a place on an Enviro-Entrepreneurs Course in 2005.

Joining Matthew and I for the launch of the "Greenie" were Councillor Susan Wise, Cabinet Member for Customer Services, and children from Cooper's Lane Primary School.
