I am delighted to have ‘cut the ribbon’ on the Go Green initiative and I welcome Go-Ahead’s campaign. More and more Londoners are using buses, and although public transport is much better for the environment than using a car, there is still an environmental cost. This system will help reduce the costs to the environment and save fuel.
I am also delighted by the ‘added benefits’ of the scheme – I do get letters from constituents complaining about buses they’ve been on when they’ve fallen over due to the bus going around a corner too fast or breaking too quickly. This system will help drivers know when they’re not being fuel efficient and driving without sufficient consideration for their passengers.
I was also impressed by the drivers’ enthusiasm. The drivers I met with had clearly seen the benefits for their fuel consumption, their passengers and had even ‘carried over’ these benefits when driving their own cars.
The system is being rolled out on all 1,500 Go-Ahead buses in London at the rate of 12 buses a week over a two-year programme and drivers are being given training in the driving techniques.
