Minister Fails on EMA

Following the Secretary of State’s statement in the House of Commons on Monday, I welcome the announcement that students who are part way through a course and currently in receipt of the full £30 per week Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) will not completely lose out in the next academic year.

Fighting for Lewisham College Students Over EMA

I recently visited Lewisham College to talk to students in receipt of Education Maintenance Allowance. 229 of the students who are on two year courses will have their current EMA cut off when year one ends this summer.  The students told me they were spending their allowances on books, equipment, fares and food.

Unveiling Solar Panels at Edmund Waller School

On 15 June 2010 I had the pleasure of ‘unveiling’ the solar panels at Edmund Waller School. The panels have been in place since the spring and the school has already saved close to 7 tonnes of CO2.

Lewisham Street Litter to Be Recycled

A new recycling bin is being trialled on the streets of Lewisham town centre, with the aim of encouraging people to recycle their litter.  The "Greenie" is a split recycling bin which enables people to drop litter into one of two sections: one for general litter and one specifically for recyclable waste.

Today I visited Crossways Academy in Brockley.  During the visit some students took me on a tour of the school's modern facilities.  I then meet politics students for a question and answer session on topics ranging from policies affecting young people to the future of the Labour Party.

Meeting Crossways Academy Students at the House of Commons

Today I met with students from Crossways Academy in the House of Commons.  The students were on a school trip to learn more about the history and workings of Parliament.  They also had the opportunity to quiz me on issues ranging from the stereotyping of young people by the media to what it is like being an MP.

'Count the Beat' at Lewisham Bridge School

Today I visited Lewisham Bridge Primary School to watch a special assembly in which pupils demonstrated an innovative learning method based on music.  The assembly was the culmination of the children's 'Count the Beat' classes which uses musical rhythms and beats to teach pupils key mathematical principles.
