Last week the scandal at the Passport Office made headlines. After repeated denials of a backlog by the Head of the Passport Office the Prime Minister was forced to admit that 30,000 applications had been delayed as the office dealt with unprecedented numbers of applications. Several constituents have sought my help.
We’ve taken up the cases of all the constituents who have contacted me and I am delighted that we have been able to resolve them. But people should not have to resort to contacting their Members of Parliament in order to get a proper service from government.
Labour called on the Home Secretary to ‘get a grip’. After leaked photographs showed boxes of applications piling up extra staff were drafted in and offices opened 7 days a week. As we approach the school holidays I very much hope that this situation will be resolved and that all those with journeys planned receive their documents in time.
If you live in Lewisham Deptford and you are experiencing a problem you can contact my office for assistance and I know that my parliamentary colleagues will do the same.
Of course summer does not necessarily mean going abroad or battling with the Passport Office.
In Lewisham there are a variety of festivals and events going on over the next few weeks – from Hilly Fields Midsummer Fayre and Manor House Gardens Festival on June 21st, to Bellingham Festival on June 28th and Brockley Open Studios on July 5th – 7th and toping it all off Lewisham Peoples Day returning for its 30th year on July 12th in Mountsfield Park – all fantastic events Enjoy your summer.
