The report has found that the majority of patients are not receiving acceptable standards of care and treatment. Pancreatic cancer has the worst survival rate for any cancer in the UK, with only three per cent of people diagnosed with the disease surviving beyond five years; shockingly, this statistic has not improved significantly in the last 40 years.
I have joined other MPs in signing Early Day Motion 2365 – ‘Pancreatic Cancer UK and Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month’, which expresses concern about the report’s findings and calls for action to improve early diagnosis, eradicate geographical variations in care and ensure that patients and their families are better supported.
Pancreatic Cancer UK is hoping to double survival rates for pancreatic cancer over the next five years and is calling on the Government to ensure that this ambition is realised. It is imperative that we raise awareness of the disease and encourage research funding if we are to improve future sufferers’ chances of survival.
