Londoners to be Hit by More of Boris’ Fare Rises

On 14th September Boris Johnson confirmed that fares on London public transport will rise by 2% above the RPI (Retail Price Index) next year. The Conservative Mayor has raised fares repeatedly since 2008.

This has led to Lewisham residents paying hundreds of pounds a year more to use public transport.

The decision to raise fares by 2% above inflation means that:

• A single bus ticket will increase by 56% and a weekly bus and tram pass will increase by 47%
• A weekly zone 1-2 Travelcard will go up by 23%, costing £291 more per year
• A weekly zone 1-6 Travelcard will go up by 22%, costing £509 more per year

Boris Johnson has done nothing to support Londoners from punitive fares at this difficult time.  People in Lewisham have to use public transport to get to work, and with wages being kept down and jobs lost, they can ill afford these increases.
