I was saddened to learn that there was an incident involving eggs being thrown at Lewisham Mosque and I hope that there will be no further incidents. It is tragic that Islam should be used as a cover for violence and I am more than aware that this is against everything most adherents hold dear.
Those of us who live and work locally are always proud of Lewisham's good community relations and the diversity which brings such strength and talent to the borough. I hope hope that the shocking crime perpetrated in Woolwich will not lead to any long term discord.
This weekend is likely to be difficult if the BNP's proposed march from Woolwich to Lewisham Islamic Centre goes ahead, but if we all adopt a position of non violence and community cohesion then we will get through it and be strengthened.
I have sent messages of support to both Lewisham Islamic Centre and the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association UK and very much hope that the community will pull together at this difficult time.
