Labour Survey: Funding Crisis Creating 'Two Tier' Care Home System

98% of residential home care providers do not believe they are paid enough by local councils to be able to meet public expectations of quality, a new survey by Labour has found. 

92% say that pressure on residential care providers because of low council fees is creating a two-tier market for residential care, as new investment is directed at wealthier areas of the country with higher proportions of people who are able to self-fund their care.

Joan Ruddock, Labour MP for Lewisham Deptford, following the letter she has written to David Cameron on the inaccurate claim he made in response to her question at PMQs, said:

“The Prime Minister is completely out of touch. His Government is slashing Disability Living Allowance but at Prime Minister's Questions today he tried desperately to claim otherwise.

“The Prime Minister got this badly wrong. He should correct the record and admit the scale of his Government’s cuts to disability benefits.”

Catherine McKinnell MP, Shadow Children and Young Families Minister, responding to the publication of the ‘Children in Care and Adoption and Performance Tables’, said: 

“The true test of a good society is how it provides for its most vulnerable, in particular children in care. It is clearly important for some local authorities and parts of the court system to improve their performance when it comes to identifying children who are suitable for adoption, and then ensuring that they are placed in a timely fashion.
