Labour Survey: Funding Crisis Creating 'Two Tier' Care Home System

98% of residential home care providers do not believe they are paid enough by local councils to be able to meet public expectations of quality, a new survey by Labour has found. 

92% say that pressure on residential care providers because of low council fees is creating a two-tier market for residential care, as new investment is directed at wealthier areas of the country with higher proportions of people who are able to self-fund their care.

Youth Services Policy Review

Labour has today launched a Policy Review document on Services for Young People. 

Karen Buck MP, Labour’s Shadow Minister for Young People, has highlighted the benefits of hosting youth centres in schools. 

Karen Buck MP said: 

“Many youth centres do a fantastic job, but too many are not up to scratch: poorly funded, not open at the right time, and not used by enough young people. In the worst cases, they can be target for gangs or those committing antisocial behaviour. Labour wants that to change. Youth Centres should be ‘safe havens’ for young people.

MPs & Public Back End to Legal Loan Sharking as MP Pushes for Legislation

As research is released showing two thirds of the public back a cap on the cost of credit and so do MPs, Labour MP Stella Creasy today appealed to parliamentarians to listen to the British public and vote for proposals to tackle legal loan sharking. Amendment 40 to the Financial Services Bill will give the new Financial Conduct Authority the power to cap the charges made for credit and so the cost of borrowing, but the Government has pledged to oppose this measure.

New Shadow Frontbench Team

Ed Miliband MP, Leader of the Opposition and Leader of the Labour Party, has today announced changes to his frontbench team.

Jon Cruddas is to become Coordinator of the Labour Party Policy Review.

Ed Miliband will recommend to the National Policy Forum that Angela Eagle becomes its new chair.

Owen Smith is to replace Peter Hain as Shadow Secretary of State for Wales.

Andrew Adonis will advise the Policy Review on areas of Labour’s industrial strategy.
