Following 10 days of talks in Dublin, an international agreement has been reached on a new convention prohibiting the use, production and stockpiling of all cluster munitions. Britain will now work to achieve the widest possible international support for the agreement.
Cluster munitions raise humanitarian concerns because they scatter smaller bombs, which can fail to explode on impact but subsequently cause serious harm to civilians even once a conflict has ended. Up to 60% of the victims of cluster munitions in Southeast Asia are children. Britain spends around£10million per year clearing unexploded munitions, including cluster bombs.
