Health Secretary Alan Johnson today announced detailed regional funding for deep cleaning. All NHS Trusts will have to submit detailed deep cleaning plans, including costs, to their Primary Care Trusts and Strategic Health Authorities (SHAs).
Deep cleaning is one element of a wider range of measures introduced by the Government which all Trusts need to take to tackle healthcare associated infections and ensure patient safety.
The London Strategic Health Authority intends to spend £8 million to support the deep clean.
This announcement comes as the Health Protection Agency recently released figures showing that Lewisham Hospital now has one of the lowest rates of MRSA and C.difficile infections in the country.
I hope that the deep clean announcement by Alan Johnson will help hospitals across the country to reduce rates of infection. Two years ago I called for Lewisham Hospital to screen patients for MRSA on arrival at the hospital and I'm delighted that this policy and the hard work of nurses and cleaners on the wards has made such a big difference.
