Home Secretary Seeks to Ban Deactivated Fire Arms

11/1/2008

The Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith, has moved to introduce strict controls on firearms that have been deactivated.

Deactivated guns are not capable of firing live ammunition, but criminals often alter them for re-use, turning them back into deadly weapons to be used on our streets.

During a visit to Merseyside as part of the Tackling Gangs Action Programme, Jacqui Smith announced that a move to control deactivated firearms could be introduced before the end of the year.

Gun crime is a key issue for people in south London and I have previously pressed for action on deactivated guns as a result of speaking to the Met.  I'm delighted the Home Secretary has taken up the cause.
