The Government launched proposals which could see roughly a third of electricity coming from renewable sources by 2020.
Currently in the UK renewables account for:
- around 5% of our electricity supply - by 2020 this could be around 32%
- less than 1% of our heat supply - by 2020 it could be around 14%
- less than 1% of transport fuel - by 2020 it could be 10%
- Introducing financial support mechanisms to incentivise renewable heat, decentralised energy and microgeneration.
- Removing barriers that currently prevent renewable generators exporting electricity to/ getting access to the national grid.
- Changing the planning system to speed up renewable applications and giving local communities a real stake in renewable energy schemes.
- Doing more to exploit the full sustainable potential of energy from waste and biomass.
- Working with local communities and developers to bring forward decentralised energy schemes.
