£1 Million Emergency Funding for Rape Crisis Centres

20/3/2008

Harriet Harman, the Minister for Women, has announced £1 million of new funding to keep Rape Crisis Centres open.

This funding will keep vital support services for rape victims running while a sustainable business model is worked on for the longer term.

Last year there were more than 13,000 recorded rapes in England, but many still go unreported as victims are often reluctant to come forward. The Government has emphasised that it takes rape extremely seriously and is committed to bringing offenders to justice.  Funding for support for victims of sexual offences has significantly increased over the last eight years from about £400,000 in 2001/2002 to £3million today.
